Topic: John Whitton "Father of NSW Rail network"
Alan will tell us about John Whitton (1819–1898) who was the long-serving Engineer-in-Chief of the New South Wales Government Railways and who is widely regarded as the father of the NSW rail network. His work included the Blue Mountains line, the Great Zig Zag, and large sections of the Main Western and Great Southern lines. Whitton insisted on durable, high-quality engineering that shaped rail construction standards for generations. Under his leadership NSW railways expanded from 37km to 3,555km.
